How to Avoid a Color Mistake

As a designer, I get endless questions about color – for paint, fabrics, furnishings, drapes, you name it. And I’ll say up front: there is no ‘wrong’ color, it’s subjective! But there is a method to selecting what’s right for you. When I work with you, I ask two questions before I get into anything specific. Your answers guide nearly every decision we make together:

  1. What’s the function of the room?
  2. How do you want to feel in the room?

Once we’re clear on the room’s function and feeling, we talk about how color can affect you. There is a lot of research about how color can make you feel and being aware of that information can help you make decisions that are right for you. I tapped ColorPsychology.org to create this little cheat sheet. I liked the way they identified each color’s positive and negative effects.
